What is Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG)?

con-sum-er pack-aged goods
noun
Also known as Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG), these are the types of products which consumers need to frequently restock, sometimes daily, like food, groceries, beverages, housekeeping products, medical products, or any other product used frequently and consumed quickly. These products have a short shelf life and are normally sold at a relatively low cost.

The opposite category of consumer goods is Fast-Moving Consumer Durables (FMCD), known as durable goods, hard goods, or consumer durables. Consumer durables are the goods that yield utility over time rather than being completely consumed in one use. Some examples of consumer durables include household goods, automobiles, books, jewelry, etc. Both categories of consumer goods are being sold online, with some – such as groceries – experiencing high growth rates due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
